Code for Sustainable Homes

Since May 2008 all new Houses in England are assessed against the Code for Sustainable Homes. In 2010 all new homes must achieve code level 3, From 2013 code level 4 will apply and from 2016 code level 6. In Wales all new social housing must be level code level 4 compliant as soon as possible and all new housing must be code level 5 by 2011.

The Code consists of a number of credits for achieving a range of criteria that includes Health. Intrinsic to Health is "Daylighting," which provides a maximum overall score of 3.5%. The Code requires most daylight in the kitchen followed by living rooms and studies. The practical application of the Code is that these rooms tend to be moved into the roofspace, requiring the installation of rooflights.

Combining rooflights with use of glazed elevations helps to maximise  the credits available under the Code, but careful consideration must be given to avoid overheating of the structure as a whole and potential for heat loss. Let Primalux assist  you in assessing the true impact of the installation of rooflights.
