Today's thermal calculations do not reflect the true heat loss of a skylight in use. In effect a rooflight is treated in the same way as a window, in that it is regarded as an interruption to the insulation in the area of the installation only, as in the top example.
However to assess the true heat loss of a rooflight one should assess the full effect of the profile of the dome, frame and upstand. In this way a 1m2 opening can equal approximately 2.5m2 surface area for heat loss calculations.
It is also vital that in any rooflight design, due consideration is given to the effects of thermal bridging across the frame. In every way Primalux have considered this, in combination with air tightness detailing, to produce distinctive solutions.
With our ability to also produce thermal calculations and to determine the effects upon the depth of roof insulation required, we can be a vital part of your design team.
